Are There Any Health Benefits Of Filter Coffee?

Aside from water, coffee is one of the world’s most consumed beverages. While most people reach for a fresh cup when they feel in need of an energy boost, it turns out there is more to love about coffee. It’s packed with antioxidants, features beneficial nutrients, and whether you realize it or not, it has been quietly providing you with a range of health benefits for years.

Filter coffee is where the beans have been roasted and ground – it’s used in coffee machines and let’s face it – it generally tastes a lot better than granulated coffee. It often has more caffeine and less acrylamide, and it offers all the same benefits of any other coffee, with the bonus enhanced flavour.

Energy Boost & Focus

Drinking filter coffee won’t make you smarter, however, it does boost your focus which allows you to direct your energy. Yes, we know coffee provides us with a caffeine boost to increase energy, but what does that mean for us and our performance? The body’s bloodstream absorbs the caffeine from the coffee you drink, traveling to your brain. Once it reaches your brain it blocks adenosine, an inhibitory neurotransmitter. What does that mean? It opens the door for a dopamine boost, which means your brain is firing on all cylinders. So, coffee doesn’t make you smarter, but it does increase brain function, allowing you to make the most of the smarts you do have.

Nutrient Boost

In one cup of filter coffee, you will find potassium, manganese, magnesium, vitamins B2, B3, and B5. If you’re a four-cup a day coffee drinker, then that adds up. It’s a great way to provide your body with a glut of nutrients!

Disease Fighting

While there have been a plethora of studies on the health benefits of coffee over the years, one interesting result that continues to come up is how it may protect against type 2 diabetes. Of course, you will get the greatest benefit if you avoid adding sugar which will increase your risk. Type 2 diabetes isn’t the only disease that coffee can help fight. It’s been suggested that a healthy intake of coffee can also help protect against dementia. As yet, there is no cure for dementia, and Alzheimer’s is the leading cause of the disease globally. Parkinson’s Disease, like Alzheimer’s, is a neurodegenerative condition. Again, there is no cure, but we know that Parkinson’s is caused when the neurons that generate dopamine start to die off. According to Harvard Medical School, coffee drinkers are 25% less likely to experience Parkinson’s Disease.

There is also some suggestion that coffee drinkers experience protection against liver cancer, as well as reduced risk of liver inflammation or disease. Speaking of cancer, there have been studies suggesting coffee drinks enjoy a reduced risk of contracting liver, colorectal, prostate, endometrial, mouth, and throat cancers. The study was based on coffee lovers who drink at least four and up to six cups a day. Please note, four cups of coffee should be your limit in terms of recommended daily caffeine allowance.

Depression Fighting

According to the latest statistics, almost 7% of the American population suffers from a major depressive disorder. A study from Harvard Medical School found that women who consumed four cups of coffee daily were 20% less likely to become depressed. Another study, linked by the United Kingdom’s National Health Service, found the same results but with just two cups of coffee daily. Reduced Risk of Stroke and Heart Disease While many people still believe the myth that caffeine increases blood pressure, science is ahead of the game. Before we continue, we’re talking about an acceptable level of caffeine (400mg a day) versus an excessive amount. Bear that in mind as we discuss this particular health benefit. According to the American Heart Association, coffee drinkers are 7% and 8% less likely to suffer from heart failure and stroke respectively.

The Antioxidants

It might be surprising for you to learn, but for those of us who consume the typical Western diet, the coffee we drink might be one of the healthiest things we consume. How is that possible? Well, pure black coffee is packed with antioxidants, fat-free, and low in calories. As in, there is a single calorie in one 8 ounce cup of black coffee. Ultimately, filter coffee is one of the most popular beverages because it’s delicious. It just so happens that it can also brag a variety of health benefits to those people who choose to drink it
responsibly (no more than four caffeinated cups daily and preferably black). Coffee can energize you, help you burn more fat in your daily exercise, boost your physical performance, improve your focus, and help you fight disease. With all of those benefits, it’s safe to say that coffee might just help you live a longer, happier life.
